Voor iedereen die eens geen zin heeft in een actieve yogasessie, bied de Daily Insight van 26 mei wellicht inspiratie:

Sometimes when you’re tired, the best medicine is a restorative, rather than an active, yoga practice. Almost nothing feels as good as relaxing into the floor after a stressful day. If you’re in need of a little renewal, take a break with this restorative version of Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose).

Enter Bound Angle Pose by sitting up tall on your sitting bones and bending your knees. Place your feet against one another and bring your feet as close to your body as your knees allow. Leaning back on your hands, lower yourself to the floor. (You may support your head and torso on a pillow, bolster, or blanket along your spine, to help open your chest, if you like.) If your knees don’t easily release toward the ground or if you feel any strain in your groins, support each of your thighs on a block or folded blanket (phone books or dictionaries also work well). Rest your arms on the floor or place the backs of your hands on your thighs. Relax, breathe, and hold for five minutes if possible. To come out, use your hands to bring thighs together, roll to one side and push yourself away from the floor, allowing your head to follow the torso.

De Daily Insight van maandag 3 mei stond geheel in het teken van de verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen Yoga en Pilates…

Many yogis are beginning to recognize that Pilates – an 85-year-old system of body conditioning designed by German émigré Joseph Pilates – is a rewarding complement to asana practice. And some are finding that Pilates’ focus on building and engaging a strong core can propel their yoga practice into new realms.

While yogis are instructed to either hold poses or flow quickly through them in vinyasas, Pilates is a rhythmic practice of precise movements repeated five to 10 times for each exercise. The aim is to engage and strengthen the transversus abdominis (the deepest layer of abs that wrap around the torso horizontally), the obliques, the lower back muscles, and the pelvic floor during complex movements. By doing so, you develop a strong, corset-like support system that protects your back from injury.

Yoga and Pilates are, of course, distinct practices, but there might be times – perhaps when you’ve hit a plateau in your asana practice or are in an experimental mood – when playing with some Pilates techniques on your mat might enhance your yoga practice.

In de Daily Insight van 29 april nuttige info voor iedereen die wil weten wanneer hij/zij yoga ‘moet’ doen en welke houdingen dan het ‘beste’ zijn..

Are some poses more appropriate in the morning and are others better in the afternoon?

Aside from the general distinction between such heating/energizing poses as sun salutes and backbends, which tend to be more beneficial in the morning, and such cooling poses as forward bends and certain inversions, which are more likely to calm one down in the evening, it really depends on the person.

If, for example, you are naturally a more flexible or “bendy” person, there is a case to made for practicing in the morning when you are a little bit tighter, and therefore less likely to injure yourself by overstretching.

If you are naturally on the stiffer end of the spectrum, you may feel more limber if you practice in the latter part of the day, after you have been moving around for a while.

Different factors come into play for everyone, so try observing the effects of your practice and of specific postures at different times of the day. Then make your determination, based on the way you feel both physically and energetically.
